Reaping the rewards of solar panels

At BTG we are committed to becoming a more sustainable business, and as our company grows we pledge to monitor and control our environmental impact through various efficiency initiatives. Each year we encourage our sites to think of energy saving projects that can help us reduce our carbon footprint

Last year, we installed solar panels at our two sites located in the Adelaide region of Australia. On the roof of one site, a team attached a 99.9 kilowatt solar panel system that is capable of generating around 30% of the site’s demand for electricity, while at the other, a ground mounted 14.58 kilowatt solar panel system now generates around 65% of the site’s electricity.

“It’s a no-brainer,” explained Carol Hall, Operations Manager of the Australian sites, “when you have a climate like we do, with so many sunshine days a year, installing solar panels is a must and one of the best moves we’ve made.”

“Between the two sites we are generating approximately 174,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. This initiative has also come at a great time for BTG as South Australian electricity prices have increased, which means that we are saving around $47,000 per year in electricity costs and being greener as a result,” added Carol.

The project took advantage of an Australian government initiative offering credits to incentivise businesses and home buyers to use solar power.

Ian Davies, Director of Risk management at BTG, said: “We care about the communities we work in and continuously think abouthow we can work smarter and more efficiently to reduce our environmental impact. Whether it’s a major initiative like installing solar panels in our Australian sites, or a smaller project where we have swapped paper cups in our Camberley site for a more ecological solution; all these little changes soon add up to help us offset our energy consumption.”
