Community

Community engagement

We recognise the importance of forging close relationships with local communities in the countries where we operate. This is especially important in our sites in West Wales and South Australia where we undertake activities to raise our profile and drive recruitment. We periodically organise open days for friends and family of employees at our manufacturing facility in Wales, as well as educational open days for local school children.

Charitable donations

We principally give to charities which either support diseases or conditions in which we are therapeutically focused or that benefit the local communities in which we operate. We encourage employees to support charitable events to raise money for their chosen charities and in most locations we match individual donations up to a designated cap.

During 2010-11 we made donations of £12,921 to charities which included:

  • Cancer Research UK
  • The MS Society, UK
  • Marie Curie Cancer care, UK
  • Wales Air Ambulance, Wales
  • Christian Lewis Children's Cancer Charity, Wales
  • Ty Hafan - palliative care for children, Wales

In February 2011 our office in Philadelphia organised an activity day at Melmark, a local provider of residential, educational, therapeutic, and recreational services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Our employees partnered with students and adults for a fun, interactive day on the dance floor.

Our London office organised Hunt Your London last year, a team based treasure hunt around the City of London. This was a fun team building exercise and also raised money for our corporate charity Cancer Research UK.

In addition, we operate a Give As You Earn ('GAYE') Scheme in the UK. This enables employees to efficiently donate, so money that would normally be given in tax goes to their chosen charity instead.

Our latest Annual Report includes a full summary of all our 2010-11 activities, together with our latest data to help us understand and manage our various community and environmental impacts.

Targets for 2011-12

  • Launch a new global charitable donation policy to provide guidance to our employees and to ensure we are fair in our approach to giving and do so in line with our values; and
  • Organise community/charitable activities at each office to raise money or donate time for our local corporate charities.
Understanding our environmental impacts

Our Corporate Responsibility Committee comprises employees from all the main areas of the business, as we recognise that this breadth of knowledge helps us to understand all of our environmental impacts.

Code of Conduct

Our Code of Conduct describes the principles, policies and procedures we have developed to promote understanding of, and adherence to, the ethical behaviours that we expect of all employees.
